Our mission is to improve the lives of local people coping with or recovering from mental or physical ill-health. We have a dedicated team who are vital to making this happen as well as ensuring our continued success.

What it is like to work here

We think Sydenham Garden is a great place to work. The garden itself is beautiful, especially in the summer months, and we are all committed to delivering the mission of the charity for local people. We are continuously striving to improve our work, so it is always busy, but there is a fantastic sense of teamwork, with staff and volunteers working together to get things done.

Everyone who works here has a voice and a stake in the charity’s work and progress.

Developing talent

We are fully committed to providing training and development opportunities for all our team, staff and volunteers alike, and to promoting a culture of lifelong learning.

Aside from our Support Volunteer roles, we also sometimes have home and office-based volunteering opportunities, which offer the chance to make a difference, develop your skills, and meet interesting and inspiring people from all walks of life.

Trustees

September 2025: We are looking for three experienced and enthusiastic people to join our Board of Trustees, the team with overall responsibility for Sydenham Gardens’ running as a charity.

We are open to expressions of interest from potential trustees from all backgrounds, but are particularly interested in the following areas of voluntary or professional experience:

  • Fundraising and income generation
  • Antiracism, Equity, Justice, Diversity and Inclusion
For full details see post below.

Volunteering / Work Experience for Under 18s

Unfortunately, we’re not currently in a position to offer individual volunteering opportunities or work experience to Under 18s, for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme or for other purposes.

Immediate Support Volunteer opportunities

September 2025 – the weekly sessions where we are particularly looking for more Support Volunteers are

  • our Wednesday afternoon, Thursday morning & afternoon Growing Lives Project
  • our Tuesday morning and afternoon & Wednesday afternoon Art & Craft Project
A full role description for each volunteer role advertised can be found below. If a particular role seems the right one for you, please follow the link in the ‘How to apply’ section at the bottom of it.
